Email Phishing targets PTSA

Our executive vice president recently received an email which purportedly came from our president.

Here’s what the email looked like:

From:  President first name<>
Date: February 5, 2019 at 6:49:38 AM PST
Subject: Hi  VP first name
Are you available at the moment? The board need some gift cards for donation….
can you get some today? If Yes Kindly get back to me quick
You will surely be reimbursed
president first name
Note a few disturbing issues:
  • the reply-to address is not an email address we recognise
  • the subject was personal, referring to our correctly  VP by her first name
  • it was “signed” correctly with our president’s first name
  • it was asking for gift cards

It seems quite a bit of research went into this phishing scam. Please be careful with these types of emails.

Welcome back to school!

If you are a new parent, or just trying to get back into the swing of things, check out our New Parent page and make sure you’re signed up for all the right e-news feeds, and that you know what information is available to you.  Back to School packets should be sent out to your home around August 10th.  You should have received a letter from the Principal with back to school events, and know that your student’s schedule should be available to them on Infinite Campus now.

Helping at Gunn High School

School will start August 13th.  The school relies on an army of parent volunteers to help get school started, and then to provide a wide range of services during the year.

Click here to see Gunn PTSA open positions.  We need help and food for staff appreciation and lunch events, feeding students at test time, serving at student barbeques and the turkey feast, help with homecoming and grad night, helping staff parent ed school and PTSA events, and then helping run the PTSA itself.

Click here to volunteer in various classes and offices at school.  Help is especially needed in the first weeks back to school.  These positions include help with back to school textbook distribution, college & career, student activities, tutoring, library, arts, athletics, special ed, languages and classroom help in a variety of classes…

Sign up if you’re interested, or if you just want more information, let us know, and we will contact you with it.

Johns Hopkins University identifies Volunteering as one of the essential ways a parent can contribute to a student’s success at school. Gunn PTSA has many volunteer opportunities, some that bring parents on campus to serve students directly, and some working with other parents on school-related projects – all of which are designed to support students and the school. Being on campus is especially beneficial for parents so you can experience the Gunn “ecosystem” yourself!
